The AI Research and Experimental Design Working Group focuses on the next generation of AI methods that transform how scientific research is conceived, executed and validated.
The group explores autonomous laboratories, AI-assisted hypothesis generation, foundation models for science, laboratory automation, high-throughput experimentation and human-AI collaboration throughout the scientific process. Bringing together AI researchers, domain scientists and infrastructure experts, it investigates methodological advances that can be transferred across scientific disciplines while promoting reproducibility, interoperability and responsible AI adoption.
Exploring AI systems that support hypothesis generation, experimental planning and scientific reasoning.
Investigating robotics, laboratory automation and closed-loop experimentation.
Assessing opportunities and limitations of large AI models across research domains.
Identifying transferable methodologies that benefit multiple research communities.

Each Working Group brings together a selected group of experts contributing to the co-creation of the AI in Science Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). Members were appointed through an open call for expression of interest based on their expertise, experience, and ability to contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration across AI and scientific research domains.
